Saying ‘goodbye’ to an old friend
The former glory of the Slidell Municipal Auditorium is no more as the city of Slidell finally said goodbye to the 54-year-old building and demolition crews started to tear it down Monday morning. The building was heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina, and even though the main ballroom has been used for the past five years, the Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to pay for a brand new auditorium which will begin construction sometime before the end of the summer. The new, modern auditorium, designed by Sizeler Thompson Brown Architects will be raised off the ground, have a larger ballroom and a glass-enclosed atrium in the entrance. A soldier from Fort Polk has been arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail for aggravated rape and attempted first degree murder after authorities believe he raped and brutally attacked an employee at a Mandeville-area gas station.
